Commissioned by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, Saratoga Associates is the lead designer for the East Gate Plaza. The team of landscape architects, architects, and engineers was in attendance of the ribbon cutting ceremony, joining Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin, State Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseld, WOTH Friends Executive Director Elizabeth Waldstein, Senator Sue Serino, Senator Michelle Hinchey, Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson, Poughkeepsie Mayor Robert Rollson, Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro, Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan, Town of Lloyd Supervisor Frederick Pizutto, and Open Space Institute Vice President for Parks and Stewardship Peter Karis.
The Plaza includes a new building for the Friends of the Walkway Over the Hudson, vending area, seating pavilion, and bicycle racks! The project nearly doubled the size of the pathway at the Washington Street Stairs, providing a great location for community events and outdoor recreation. Beyond improved user experience, several sustainable solutions are incorporated into the Plaza. Saratoga Associates’ design includes rainwater collection, permeable pavement, improved structure through the replacement of the retaining wall, energy efficient heat pump, and natural landscaping.
