Riverlink Park Phase I & II
Saratoga Associates’ 2001 Waterfront Redevelopment Strategy imagined a grand greenway along Amsterdam’s physically isolated riverfront. Working closely with City leaders, the firm helped secure funding for development of this 9.5 acre waterfront park.
Initial park development provided a critical link between downtown and the waterfront with construction of an ADA compliant pedestrian bridge crossing a heavily used rail corridor. A public plaza with a distinctive bandshell serves as a concert venue, and a shoreline promenade provides a place for a quiet stroll, fishing and boat tie-up. An event lawn and concession building enhance green space and generate revenue for the City.
The second phase of development expanded the park to an adjacent remediated brownfield site. Extended walkways and open lawn play area with picnic facilities and playground offer additional recreation opportunities. A unique sculpture depicting a Native American hunting scene is a central focal point. Paving systems, plantings, lighting, benches and other pedestrian amenities unify the site and create an attractive public space. Riverfront Park connects to the Mohawk Valley Gateway Pedestrian Bridge over the Mohawk River completing a ½ mile greenway along a waterfront that had been inaccessible for decades.
