Rothermel Park Enhancements

About the Park

Rothermel Park is a popular community gathering space located within the Village of Kinderhook, directly adjacent to the Albany-Hudson Electric Trail (aka AHET; part of the Empire State Trail), positioning it for use by community members, trail users, and visitors. The 7.4-acre park currently offers three baseball fields, a tennis-pickleball court, a basketball court, a playground, a pavilion, and restrooms. Parking is available along Rothermel Avenue and at the Trailhead. The Persons of Color Cemetery is a separate 0.3-acre parcel located along the southeastern side of the park entry drive and is listed with the National Register of Historic Sites as well as the New York State Register of Historic Places.

Project Goals

The Village of Kinderhook received a grant award under the NY Forward program to make improvements to Rothermel Park. Potential improvements that were part of the initial concept plan are outlined in the image below.

We also plan to update the restrooms to make them more accessible and may look to include exercise equipment, bocce, chess/game tables, bike racks, and locate a T-ball field!

A concept plan for the park, noting potential improvements: a gateway sign, a path and tree plantings, a pavilion, playground equipment updates and safety surfacing, a tennis/pickleball court, a splash pad, and adjusting the location of the ballfield.

The Process

Saratoga Associates was hired to develop an overall master plan for updates to the park.

A kick-off meeting with the Village was held in early May and the site survey is nearly complete.

Concepts will be developed that incorporate various proposed improvements, along with cost estimates, for review. This will inform priorities and identify items that might need additional funding.

When Phase I items are selected, we will develop construction drawings, obtain bids, and plan to build the improvements in the 2027 construction season!

How to Participate

Share Feedback

Watch for information about community engagement, where we will look for feedback on the proposed improvements. We may have information at the Farmers Market or other community events. We anticipate providing updates via the Village’s weekly email blast.
