Schenectady Municipal Golf Course Restoration

Saratoga Associates was part of a design team retained to update the Depression-era Schenectady Municipal Golf Course to modern-day standards. Saratoga Associates managed all parts of the softscape redesign and drainage enhancements from concept to the development of construction bid documents. Saratoga also led the course visioning process and public outreach efforts.

The project included the construction of a new pump house and installation of a new irrigation system, in addition to an overall long-term visioning redesign of the course. The redesign, when realized, will allow it to remain healthy and viable for generations.

Thinning of lower growth trees was performed throughout the course to improve air flow, expand course viewsheds, and enhance playability and long-term turf health.

Renovations to the course and enhancements to the drainage and irrigation systems will enable the City to more efficiently manage the site with modern-day technology, rather than the systems that had been installed piecemeal since the course’s original construction in the 1930s. The final product will be an increasingly popular, better-conditioned golf course that can be more efficiently managed, while providing enhanced playability.
