National Grid, Worcester County, MA
To better serve the energy needs of northeast Massachusetts, National Grid proposed a 5.3 mile overhead electric transmission line within a newly cleared right-of-way. The project included the replacement of one existing electric substation and new construction of another.
Saratoga Associates prepared photo realistic simulations of the proposed transmission line and substations to demonstrate to regulatory agencies and the general public the potential visual impact of the project on the local landscape.
Photo simulations were developed by superimposing a rendering of a three-dimensional computer model of the proposed project into the base photograph taken from each studied vantage point The three-dimensional computer model was developed using Autodesk Civil 3D® and 3D Studio Max Design® software. Design details of the proposed transmission line and substations were built into the 3D model and incorporated into the photo simulation. Consequently, the scale, alignment, elevations, location, color and materials of the visible elements of the proposed facilities are true to the conceptual design. Existing forest cover was also built into the 3D model to allow for accurate representation of tree clearing within the proposed transmission corridor.
