Siek Campus Center Architectural Design

Hudson Valley Community College, Troy, New York

The Siek Campus Center is the core of student activity at 13,000-student Hudson Valley Community College. Originally a stone-clad concrete building, the only natural light to reach the interior was through east-facing light monitors on the roof.  The student center provides important services, supplies, and programs to the student population, but a lack of windows and materiality had rendered the Siek building bunker-like and undesirable.

Saratoga Associates was tasked with the redesign of the 33 year-old student center.  The most dramatic transformation of the Siek Campus Center was the replacement of the stone panels with an insulated, UV-filtering glazing system.  The program spaces included: The kitchen and dining hall, the bookstore, café/coffee shop, lounge areas, as well as various office suites that are focused on student activities.

With the addition of dramatic entry vestibules and a completely renovated interior, this $7 million, 80,000 sf building renovation successfully transformed a windowless concrete bunker into a light-filled beacon at the heart of Campus.
