Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) is the oldest technological research university in the country. Internationally renowned for its engineering programs, RPI has over 6,500 students.
The main green space defining the academic core, the Technology Quad, had become worn and uninviting. Saratoga Associates redesigned the quad to allude to RPI’s spirit of innovation. A connective green space creatively meanders and weaves between major academic buildings. The project included total reconstruction of a quadrangle and pedestrian spine connecting the new Experimental Media Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) and the Bio-Technology Center at RPI.
As the prime consultant, Saratoga Associates provided programming, concept design, construction documents, and construction administration services. The overall design concept presented a unifying, park-like organization for this heavily traveled campus space. Significant to the design were an east-west pedestrian artery, the relocation and screening of obtrusive service areas, a “green” screen wall, and a curvilinear pavement design that symbolizes the high-tech research performed in the adjacent buildings.
