NYC School Construction Authority, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Bronx, NY
As part the PlaNYC program to provide an outdoor recreation space within a ten minute walk of every New York City resident, the NYC SCA initiated a program to renovate a twelve public school playgrounds throughout the City. In most cases the original playground space was in decline with deteriorating pavement, rusting fences, overgrown planting beds and worn lawn areas.
Redesign of each playground focused on accommodating student play needs as well as providing community park and recreation resources. Playgrounds were designed to minimize the feel of a fenced in schoolyard by incorporating colorful play equipment, safety surfacing, drinking fountains, trees, shrubs and flowering plants, as well as game tables, benches and art. Each project was adapted to the needs of the school and community. Projects include specialized spaces such as an outdoor learning lab with a focus on nature, a sitting area for seniors, a reading garden, and a gazebo.
These public parks are now open spaces serving K-8 students and neighborhood residents while enhancing the aesthetic quality of both school and neighborhood. Saratoga Associates provided conceptual design through construction observation services to the NYC SCA for the redevelopment of each playground/park.
