Plant Science – Mann Library Roof Terrace

Plant Science – Mann Library Roof Terrace

Cornell University, Ithaca, New York

A world class University, Cornell continues to enhance its campus setting with a series of “secret gardens”. Working with a faculty committee that included representatives of the School of Landscape Architecture and the Plant Science Department, Saratoga Associates developed a conceptual design for a terrace garden on the roof of the Albert Mann Library on the University’s Agricultural Quad.

The two-level roof terrace combines extensive green roof systems with hardscape areas accented by benches, tables and chairs, and large tree planters.  Sun-pattern and climate analyses informed the final plan, along with program requirements, technical waterproofing issues, and existing pedestrian traffic patterns through the space. The garden provides a place for informal gathering, quite outdoor study and small campus events.
