Muttontown Preserve Master Plan

Muttontown Preserve Master Plan

Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Museums, Mineola, NY

The Muttontown Preserve is Nassau County’s largest nature preserve and one of the most beautiful settings on the otherwise built environment of Long Island. With miles of marked nature trails, it is popular for walking, birding and cross-country skiing.

Saratoga Associates developed a Master Plan and Guiding Principles that inform future development projects in the Preserve, as well as other County-owned cultural and open space facilities. This comprehensive plan proposes adaptive reuse of landmark structures on the site, expansion of equestrian facilities, restoration and improvement of natural habitats, and implementation of clearly defined trail connections to historic structures and ruins.

A series of public workshops were conducted to ensure full stakeholder involvement throughout the design process and project implementation. Trail systems were recommended for enhancement and to accommodate a variety of users including bicycles, joggers, horses, and hikers. Educational and interpretive systems will highlight the Preserve’s unique flora, fauna, and natural features. Clear and organized signage will resolve challenging trail wayfinding.
