NYSOPRHP, Staatsburg State Historic Site, Staatsburg, New York
Staatsburg State Historic Site is the elegant country home of Ogden Mills. Overlooking the Hudson River, the property is a fine example of a great estate built by America’s industrialists during Gilded Age (1876-1917). The Mansion, designed by Stanford White of McKim Mead and White, was constructed in 1895.
Over the decades architectural features began to deteriorate requiring significant repair. On the east portico a new floor was installed using salvaged marble tiles. New column capitals cast in glass fiber-reinforced concrete were constructed and the marble steps of the grand entrance were reset and cleaned. The project incorporated ADA compliant ramps sympathetic to the historic building vocabulary.
A historic landscape restoration plan was also completed. The plan referenced historical photos and incorporated an inventory of historic plants completed by the OPRHP. Deer resistant species similar to historic plants originally used were identified and a removable net system was designed to keep deer at bay.
Saratoga Associates performed complete design services through construction administration for the East Portico Repair and Restoration.
