Juniper Valley Park is a heavily used recreational public park in Middle Village, Queens. The park’s ball fields, home to a very popular youth baseball program had become worn out; grass would no longer grow and fences, backstops and bleachers were rusting and unsafe.
The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation retained Saratoga Associates to reconfigure and upgrade the Juniper Valley ball fields to meet enhanced recreational competition standards. Saratoga’s new layout for the fields, including two baseball fields with increased field dimensions and one little league/softball field, was a pinwheel design. The project included the installation of automated irrigation systems in the natural turf fields and sub-drain systems in the infields. In addition, warning tracks, new turf, a professional-grade infield, pitching, and home plate clays were integrated to complete the state-of-the-art baseball park.
New walkways, plazas, lighting, benches and other spectator amenities were constructed to create a complete ballpark environment. The durable and attractive facilities are highly popular and now adequately meet the field play demands of the surrounding neighborhoods.
