The area immediately adjacent to the Broadway Junction subway station in Brooklyn, where multiple mass transit lines converge, was compromised by numerous vehicular/pedestrian circulation conflicts and serious safety concerns.
As part of the Mayor’s Complete Streets Initiative, Saratoga Associates redesigned the subway entrance to reduce use conflicts and improve the aesthetic quality of the urban space. The site design included an inventory and analysis of existing site conditions, facilitation of discussions during Technical and Community advisory meetings, and streetscape design alternatives to create a safer and self-regulating pedestrian environment. Key to the project design were intuitive pedestrian crossings, coordinated spaces for vendor, pedestrian, and commuter activity, and much-needed amenities including pedestrian lighting and furnishings.
Saratoga Associates participated in public outreach efforts with community stakeholders in order to ensure that design recommendations were responsive to their concerns regarding the many pedestrian circulation issues associated with this site.
