’86 Field Pedestrian Promenade

’86 Field Pedestrian Promenade

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY

RPI’s ’86 Field was a gift of the class of 1886 and the historic site of Rensselaer’s football games. Today the former sports field is an active campus greenspace. Heavy pedestrian use necessitated design of a more efficient and attractive circulation system along the perimeter of the field.

Saratoga Associates’ visionary design improves pedestrian circulation and defines notable view corridors. The promenade provides an upper level terrace for viewing activities that occur on ’86 Field. It also creates distinct pedestrian nodes, gathering areas and enlivens major circulation patterns through the campus.  The design features provide spacious and intimate spaces for seating, gathering and viewing activities. The project also included pedestrian and vehicular site lighting and replacement of existing utilities within the project corridor. Saratoga Associates provided the landscape architecture and engineering services for the conceptual design, construction documents and performed construction administration services.
