New York City Department of Transportation, New York, NY
New York City’s Select Bus Service (SBS) provides rapid transit style bus service along key corridors throughout the City. Key components of SBS are easily identifiable architecturally designed bus transit stops, dedicated lanes, and efficient station access and egress. The 34th Street Transitway project enhances cross-town river-to-river bus service in Manhattan.
Saratoga Associates provided landscape architecture, urban design, and certified arborist services in developing final design documents for the construction of bus bulbs along this critical transportation corridor. The bus bulbs include new tree plantings as well as planting pockets designed to capture, infiltrate, and reduce storm water runoff, to the greatest extent possible. The new bus bulbs improve system speed and efficiency, and improve the streetscape aesthetic. Design elements include placement of bus shelters, ticket vending machines, benches and lean bars, as well as pedestrian drop curbs, wheelchair access ramps and detectable warning pavers.
Saratoga Associates provided interface with NYC Department of Parks & Recreation Forestry Division for all tree-permitting issues. The project was coordinated and packaged with a NYC Department of Design & Construction project, for in-roadway infrastructure improvements.
