1st and 2nd Avenue Selected Bus Service Site Design

New York City Department of Transportation, New York, NY

New York City’s Select Bus Service (SBS) provides rapid transit style bus service along key corridors throughout the City. Key components of SBS are easily identifiable architecturally designed bus transit stops, dedicated lanes, and efficient station access and egress.

As a key member of the NYCDOT 1st and 2nd Avenue SBS design team, Saratoga Associates provided landscape architecture, urban design, and certified arborist services in developing the final design documents for the construction of twelve bus bulbs along this critical transportation corridor in Manhattan. The new bus bulbs are designed to improve system speed and efficiency, as well as the streetscape aesthetic. Station design included street tree installations and landscaped areas designed to capture and infiltrate stormwater runoff.

The new pallet of urban design elements incorporated into the final design included the placement of bus shelters, ticket vending machines, benches and lean bars, as well as pedestrian drop curbs, wheel chair access ramps, and detectable warning pavers.
